I wonder how many more George Rhodes sculptures there are that I haven't seen yet...

ETA: GAH! Rhoads. Not Rhodes.

That looks like the one outside San Jose Technology Museum.

[identity profile] jbsegal.livejournal.com 2008-08-04 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Franklin Institute, Philly. :)
That said: 1: San Jose. Ok. :)
(I _LOVE_ his stuff.)

Oh, and call me lame if you must, but I'm trying to figure out who you are, even though I've already friended you, and I can't. :/
Help?

I used to watch the "pool ball machine" at the Museum of Science for hours (it seemed like) when I was a kid. My favorite bit is where the ball rolls down the xylophone and hits on a bell -- that sounds makes me happy whenever I hear it.

I love Rhodes as well, but I also find Arthur Ganson to be complimentary to his work: albeit with more pathos sometimes.

Yes, I quite like Ganson, too, but Rhodes is my 1st love. :)

I love that one for having 3 different gauges, as I recall.

This one (Philly, Franklin Inst.) has 2 gauges - one of which was missing its ball, and the other of which had 2 independent tracks.

Oh! This reminds me: How did you (or the group you were doing it with) get involved in maintaining the Kendall Band? I keep wanting to fix Rhodes' works, which get out of whack over time...

(Anonymous) 2008-08-04 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. I got phenomenally lucky: a few months out of art school, a dear friend called me up, asking if I wanted to work for the guy who made the 'Band. In between making new works, the T would call us up a couple times a year, asking us to make repairs. I'm not sure what's going on these days: AFAIK, the T has jobbed out the work to some art council or another.
I'm not sure what to suggest, apart from writing to Rhodes and explaining what you want to do, and what your qualifications are. It's entirely likely that he's getting on in years, and wouldn't mind an understudy to help preserve his legacy.
Find me at the end of summer party and we can chat one-on-one about it.

Duh.

Forgot to log in. That was me.

No problem. I was one of [livejournal.com profile] amqueue's guests to Baitcon 4 or 5 years back and I have been reading various susboids' LJs ever since.

I've just been informed that there's one like it at the San Jose Airport (SJC) as well.

/me looks at marnanel.org... ah ha. You changed your lj name recently, didn't you?

[identity profile] sodyera.livejournal.com 2008-08-04 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! That reminds me of the one in Port Authority Bus Station in NYC. It was broken for a while; the bells it rang in its process were among my favourite personal sound bites.

[identity profile] jbsegal.livejournal.com 2008-08-04 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. That was the 1st of his I ever saw.

I love his work.

[identity profile] bikerwalla.livejournal.com 2008-08-04 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
correct, used to be 'errorist'

[identity profile] jbsegal.livejournal.com 2008-08-04 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. Yeah. Ok, I missed the name change. No wonder I didn't know who you were. :)

[identity profile] wolfkitn.livejournal.com 2008-08-06 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
have you seen the one in the atrium of my workplace? :)

[identity profile] jbsegal.livejournal.com 2008-08-06 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Why no, no I haven't.
Hmmm.

[identity profile] wolfkitn.livejournal.com 2008-08-06 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
well, then. perhaps you should come down here and have lunch with me, someday...

There's one in either terminal B or C of Logan Airport (can't remember which). There's one in the gift shop at the Corning Museum of Glass.
