While many in the Gantcher Center audience on Wednesday were seeing former President George H.W. Bush in person for the first time, some in attendance felt a sense of déjà vu. Tufts professors criticized Bush for the same flaws repeated from his 1994 Fares Lecture, saying he spent too much time defending his actions as president and not enough time presenting the "perspectives" on the issues at hand.
"There was little intellectual, analytical matter to his talk and it was a necessary defense of Bush's son's foreign policy ideas," History Professor Pierre Laurent said of Wednesday's speech. "The 'hope not hate' message was very minimalist."
The only real difference between Bush's two speeches was that in 1994, he talked about his New England heritage, while yesterday he regaled his Texas roots.
It does indeed need to go further. I'm alarmed that the major US news sources aren't carrying it... what kind of stifling of information is going on if the London paper has that, and ours don't?
I asked my group tonight if anyone had heard of it... only one of the dozen folks had heard, and these guys read papers. Damn...
