Toraya, the oldest confectioner in Japan, ( http://www.toraya-group.co.jp or http://www.toraya-america.com ) is closing their NYC Tearoom and retail store as of 10/31/03.

I strongly suggest that anyone who hasn't had the pleasure take advantage of this wonderful shop while they still have the chance.

I hope they decide to reopen something in the states when the economy and ruling cadre change for the better.

(No, I have no idea why they're closing, but the letter they sent said "We will try our best to re-establish our business in New York at some time in the future.")

The Toraya-America web site says what sort of thing they serve, but what is the approximate cost?

Moderately pricey - the wagashi are 2-6 each. The tea meals are - iirc - about $20-25 ea. The individual items are...$5-10?

I have the feeling that we tend to spend $30/head when we go there.

Why o why do I only seem to hear about these great things when they're going away? No way are we going to be able to get to NYC by then :(

Does the home office do mail order?

road trip!

I love NYC. I adore it.
I can't afford Toraya right now...:/
If someone offers me a job before the end of the month, I'll happily take you up on the trip idea before I start...
