In a previous entry I discussed how I thought the inverter board on my Apple Powerbook-FW (Pismo) had died.

The new one arrived today.

This seems to not be the issue...
I got the new one and installed it.

Still no joy. However, and I don't know if this is just something I missed with the other one as I plugged it in too soon, or what, but the power LED - which stays dark on poweron - goes to pulsing when the machine sleeps.

Help! Please? If there are any more reasonably cheap parts I could try swapping in, or other useful diagnostics I could try (does external video have anything to do with the inverter? It seems unlikely,
but... (I haven't tried hooking up external monitors to the Pismo with the new board. Should I?))

Unfortunately, I'm unemployed and short on cash, but if there's something that's in the $20-30 that might do the trick, I'll be happy to try it...

have you tried posting this to the mac community?

the pulsing thing is definitely a "feature" of the iBooks. I didn't know the older Powerbooks had it. I have no idea about your larger problem though. I recommend the Apple support forums, Tribe.net Mac forums and maybe your local mac reseller [or smalldog up here?] for extra parts and parts advice.

How about reading the service manual?

Like, say, here:

http://manuals.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Misc/ Service/servicemanuals/powerbook_fw.pdf

Have a look. It implies, for example, that if it were the inverter board, an external monitor would have worked, and that you may need to replace the I/O logic board. but you should read it yourself.

I was hoping it would have more detailed information instead of just "swap parts at the board level", but I guess that doesn't happen any more in this day and age.

right, and it looks like a logic board will cost you an order of magnitude more than the inverter board did, so you're fucked if it turns out that's what it is. You'd probably be better off selling your current powerbook as parts and buying a new one. :(
