The golden mean/rectangle
Nov. 28th, 2006 03:58 pmSo, my previous entry was more-or-less (depending on whether I was correct or not) a snark on people who get incorrect tattoos. See, for example, Hanzi Smatter.
While waiting in the security line at Thurgood Marshall BWI Airport (Yay, GOOD people to name airports after...), I saw the pictured tattoo on the guy in front of me. I knew it was supposed to be a Golden Rectangle with a golden spiral dividing it, but I also knew it looked wrong, but didn't have net to check at the time. :)
So here I am, online again and I discover that yes, it's wrong. The spiral segment in each block of a golden rectangle runs from one corner to the opposite corner. This is very clearly not the case in some of the visible corners in that picture. As well, it looks like some of the rectangles are wrong, but I'm less clear about that.
(It seems, too, like it's got 2 sets of golden rectangles set at 90degrees from the origin of the spiral, but that's also hard to tell.)
Do people not research their (pretty much permanent) body mods, or do they just not care?
Yeah, that's kinda rhetorical. :/
