I dunno if "found" implies an easter-egg-hunt-type game, but if you're looking to purchase, Whole Foods sells excellent macaroons. I'm also fond of their chocolate macaroons.
Well. I don't know if "fond" is quite the right word. "Will devour any in sight," more like.
Trying to shop at the Porter Square Star in any sort of mission oriented way is a recipe for disaster. They are almost guaranteed to not have any given specialty item you're looking for when you're looking for it.
In fact they seem to specialize in this :)
I think they know just how damnably convenient they are for zillions of people who live within a 15min walk on foot and as such aren't particularly worried about satisfying people's specific needs.
(For me it's Rossoff pickles, the only commercially sold whole dills I've found that are really fresh and really crisp)
Macaroons are really easy to make. Egg whites and sugar until foamy, fold in coconut, bake until golden around edges.
Quantities? Um. Well. If you want a LOT of them, it's 8 egg whites, 2 c. sugar, and 4 c. coconut, plus a couple of tablespoons of vanilla extract. Adjust as necessary.
The really easy way to do this is to spread the goo into the bottom of a jelly roll pan. Then you get macaroon squares when you're done.
I was about to say "you're kidding, right? We're awash in them!" but then I realized that's not, actually true - that was last year. I've not seen any this year, their place on the Passover goodie table at the coop (where I usually buy them) was taken by kosher tunafish. There's a macaroon shortage!!!!!!!!!
May I recommend homemade macaroons? Not everyone can be out of egg whites, coconuts and almonds. Homemade are WAY better than store bought (and yes, I do like the store bought, but still...)
YAY! (Sorry for the delay getting back to you...) I'll see if I can figure out an email addr for you...I think I can get one out of a list file someplace...if you don't have mail from me in 15m, send me some?)
