So, not only is he today renewing his call for an amendment banning gay marriages, he's fucking doing it in Topeka, KS.

You know Topeka. It's where Fred "God Hates Fags" Phelps is based.

There is NO WAY you can convince me this is a coincidence.

That shit-for-brains worthless pus-bag is trying to cater to the demands of that OTHER shit-for-brains worthless pus-bag.

He has GOT to go.

JB, incoherently pissed off...

actually...

Not that I ever *like* Bush, but I think it really may be an accident of timing in this instance. Bush and Kerry are both in Topeka for the 50th anniversary of Brown vs. the Board of Education, which is this same date. A bizarre coincidence, but yes, I think, just a coincidence.

No. He could have waited til he was out of town. He could have done it before going there.

The scum-suckers are so in-bed together. :/

So, he was doing it in one of the few places where he was preaching to the choir? And his shpiel wasn't going to change anyone's vote in particular? Sounds fine by me. He goddamn well knew better not to do it in, say, New York.

Sadly, the man's a dimwit that seems to actually believe he's on a mission from a god that hates everyone who might be different from dubya..

I can't say I like Kerry all that much more, but at least he's not Bush.

actually, they're not....the Phelps clan worked very hard for Al Gore in 2000, and Gore's campaign used their offices in KS then. Fred Phelps has attempted to run for several local and state offices over the last 30 years, and has always done it as a Democrat.

Bush may be sucking up to Phelps, but bringing it up in Topeka, which has a much higher tolerance for gays than most of KS, *because* Fred Phelps is against them, is actually poor planning. (though I've never been sure if they tolerate them as much as believe if Phelps hates them that much, they can't possibly be all bad.)

not really

Apparently the statement was issued while W was aboard Air Force One en route to KC, not in KC itself. Some news outlets filed from KC, leading other news outlets who were not actually present to presume that he'd made the statement at the event, but that's not actually so.

No, no, it's much worse than that.

George Bush was in Topeka, KS to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education. From his speech:

"The habits of respect must be taught to every generation." He spoke outside the once all-black Monroe Elementary School in Topeka, central to the unanimous ruling that outlawed a "separate but equal" doctrine. "Fifty years ago today, nine judges announced that they had looked at the Constitution and saw no justification for the segregation and humiliation of an entire race," Bush said.

He then went back to Air Force One and repeated his call for a constitutional amendment "defining and protecting marriage as a union of a man and a woman as husband and wife".

"The sacred institution of marriage should not be redefined by a few activist judges. All Americans have a right to be heard in this debate." (I'm a bit unclear on how passing a Constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage allows all Americans to be heard.)

I swear, the man has no sense of irony.
