So, as I've written before, I've got this 40GB Apple-branded IBM laptop drive that seems to work Just Fine when it's in an external enclosure but will throw I/O errors within a few weeks of being installed IN my laptop.

Does anyone have a 40GB laptop drive they'd be willing to swap me - short or long term - so I can try again with something else?

Thanks,
JB - not really hopefully...

For what kind of laptop? Are they all the same?

Could be either the laptop controller or the drive being unhappy when it gets too warm 9better cooling in an external case).

Is it going in an Apple laptop? (I guess not.) Doublecheck the thickness, in millimeters, spec for the drive against the spec for the slot. It might barely fit, and work initially, but still warp some connector, if it's officially too thick.

Yeah. Could be. But I doubt it, as I ran the machine with the KB removed and the drive dangling out in the air for a while and nothing was better.

That said, I still can't actually test this.

It is. Apple "Powerbook (Firewire)" aka Pismo.

Drive fits just fine. Plenty of space (and the connector is pretty much disparate from how the drive sits).

It's Very annoying.

BTW: Hi. Do I know you?

Your one identifiable userpic doesn't ring a bell, though I could also ask our 2 mutual friends...

In that case, I can only offer what a friend of mine, similarly afflicted, thought was a good name for a band: Pismo Disk Death.

I think we met once, introduced by src. Here's my straight-arrow pic, in case it helps.
