Food (Game!)
Feb. 21st, 2006 02:54 pmA) Is it still 'game meat' if it's from farmed animals?
B) Is yak generally available anyplace? Yum.
C) Farmed bear is very tasty. Dark, but not, well, gamey...
D) It's possible for sausages to be too low fat.

Date: 2006-02-21 08:10 pm (UTC)It's still the longest distance I've ever traveled for just one meal.

Date: 2006-02-21 08:27 pm (UTC)D) Yes. Same thing applies to meatballs. When I was on a low-fat kick I tried to make some with lean meat. Not so tasty. Too dry.
D) The three of us at our table agreed that the sausages weren't up to par. They didn't use enough other ingredients, notably fat and spices. So, instead of tasting like sausage, or game sausage, they tasted like ground game in a casing.
A) Either way, still tasty.
B) Yes. Tibet. But on a more serious note, I have seen Yak available at Tibetan restaurants. I've also seen it at Mongolian BBQ, but I'm not sure if that chain has any restaurants nearby.
C) It'd be interesting to compare and contrast farmed game vs. wild game.

Date: 2006-02-21 08:48 pm (UTC)B: the NYTimes had a Dining and Wine piece on yak a few months ago,
which included a website reference (for a yak specialty site, which would happily ship you some) and reviews. Sadly, I did not actually bookmark it. It was a neat article, though.
C: I don't suppose you know where to get *that*, do you?

Date: 2006-02-22 01:23 am (UTC)You will find it exactly the thing:
It will carry and fetch, you can ride on its back,
Or lead it about with a string.
The Tartar who dwells on the plains of Thibet
(A desolate region of snow)
Has for centuries made it a nursery pet,
And surely the Tartar should know!
Then tell you papa where the Yak can be got,
And if he is awfully rich
He will buy you the creature --
or else he will not.
(I cannot be positive which.)

Date: 2006-02-22 06:01 am (UTC)B) It is here in DC, but we have lots of people from places that eat stuff like that here.
C) We farm bears for food now. Fascinating.
D) Well, duh!
