Cheese balls, Mac'n'Cheese, Brussels Sprouts, Granola...

Just that it was at a Michelin 3-star restaurant. :)

I finally understand brussels sprouts, caviar, and even a few mushrooms.

Pointer to the pictures when I've had more time to think of commentary. The photographer is free to post ahead of me.

Yum.

I was going to say it sounded like French Laundry, but I didn't think you were all the way out in California! :) I agree about the brussels sprouts. His are the first, and so far only, brussels sprouts that I have ever actually enjoyed.

I have no problem with caviar or mushrooms though...

Congrats!

I was across the way at Masa a few months ago. It was great sushi, but I'm not sure it's the best I've ever had and it was by far the most expensive. I'm glad I did it but I have no need to go back.

Well, the original plan *was* to go to the French Laundry but work schedules made a trip to CA impossible this fall. JB does want to go there in the next year - want to join us if we can make schedules work out?

I would love to - if the schedules work out. Right now I'm not sure where I'll be. I'm in the middle of a world tour to figure out where I want to work next. So far we've been to Hyderabad, Zurich, Krakow, San Francisco, and Mountain View. Next is Tokyo, then Sydney.

It's not likely we'll be living in California next year, but visiting is a possibility, and flying around the world to meet people for dinner at 3 star restaurants is something we've been known to do... :)

Though if you come to eat at The French Laundry, you'll need to try Michael Mina, Gary Danko, Boulevard, Jardiniere, Zuni, Chez Panisse, Incanto, Oliveto and even Manresa (though I'm not such a fan of Manresa). Could take a couple of weeks!

But yes - please let me know if your plans firm up.

Interested in The Fat Duck maybe sometime in January?

Why yes, we were just discussing The Fat Duck. ;>

I'll add you to the email discussion for timing on French Laundry. We'd been pointed to Gary Danko and Chez Panisse too but not the others - thanks for the tip!

Oh, well Gary Danko and Michael Mina are probably my favorite two restaurants in the Bay area, with GD narrowly in first. Other "fancy" places are Aqua, Cyrus, Fleur de Lys, The Dining Room at the Ritz Carlton, Fifth Floor, Farallon, and others that some folks like that I'm not as fond of - Coi and Masa for example.

If you do make it out to San Francisco, let me know - I'll have a month's worth of restaurant advice, easily. Like for breakfast you have to go to Tartine Bakery, for sure. For coffee, Blue Bottle or Ritual. (Blue Bottle is better IMO, but the only have store fonts in San Francisco. Ritual has places to sit.)

Where sprouts are grown, and how long you cook them has bunches to do with how much I like them. Also, any member of the cabbage family benefits greatly from a sprinkling of nutmeg.

ooh, that sounds wonderful. Especially since I already understand brussels sprouts, caviar, and mushrooms before Thomas Keller gets to them. ;-)
