The Residents
Nash The Slash
...
Who else?
(and yes, I know that Nash is almost certainly Jeff Plewman, and I know about all the "The Residents are Hardy Fox and Homer Flynn" stuff, but really, I'm in search of "Musicians who can play a gig, and then hang out at the bar after and NOT be recognized".)

Not sure what you mean by this...musicians who wear disguises or costumes on stage?

That's a baseline minimum.
For Nash and The Res, there are vanishingly few pictures of them (if any) out of costume out there. While Nash's real name is known (according to Wikipedia, though the text seems to leave it below absolute certainty), The Res have yet to ever admit who they really are.

Does the Blueman Group count?

Y'know, I'm not sure. I don't think so.
They don't pretend to be a single band - it's know that there are many troupes of Blue Men around the country... Similarly, I wouldn't call Stomp a band.

Well, you could have said that about KISS for quite a while...

And, oddly enough, I know someone who used to live next door to The Residents.

But do you know The Landlord?

I do not know if The Residents owned their own home or not. I'd hope so, given how many albums they've put out...

Lordi seems to qualify.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomi_Putaansuu doesn't have a picture of the lead out of makeup, but certainly they get points off for extensive biography. :)

Hmmm. My first thought was GWAR, but I know that a couple of the members have done interviews out of character...

Yeah, GWAR was certainly one of my early possibilities but again (as with Lordi, above), they lose points for their real names being well known, and having extensive biography available online.

Okay, fair enough. I'll think about this a little more. :)

Jandek?

Though I suppose that's less true now.

Los Straitjackets?

I can't recall if Marilyn Manson has been seen out of character-- he probably has, and I just haven't seen the picture.

But given the dearth of public appearances of XTC in general, I'm wondering if the Dukes of the Stratosphear count.

Caroliner.

The Mummies played in full-body costume, but I don't think it was ever a mystery who was in the band. But, someone else could have been under all those wrappings.

Not music, but there's also the Unknown Comic.

Daft Punk. Their first album they gave interviews and posed for photos in harlequin masks; their next album had them being interviewed wearing robot heads.

It was specifically so they could get around their home town and have a couple drinks, etc. without getting mobbed.

Gorillaz? Seeing as they are cartoons and all. I know the founding member was formerly part of Blur but I somehow doubt those guys get recognized at the local pub.
