This week's dancing adventure, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lonebear, was to the Phantom 8's and caller John Marshall. (A2)

Let's start with John. He's good. Quite good. As he was on Clark's list of callers to try to catch while I was down here, this isn't really surprising. I think Tech'd like him and may want to get him in for something, if it's feasible. (Of course, one sample doesn't a fully valid experience make.)

He's more than happy to make people do things from any arbitrary position, to do odd combos, to be confusing and playful. It was good.

The club itself was fine. 4+ squares of dancers. I gather that many of them dance various C levels. Computerized square configuration. NOT a singles club - luckily, [livejournal.com profile] lonebear can dance A2 arky - but they also don't wear the garb. Average age was about...55, I'd have to guess. It was another 2 hour dance. 7 tips, but patter only, except for the last one, which also had a singer. (1 open and 6 computer generated.)

A couple of dance habits I didn't like - they don't star through (which is a typical C-dancer behavior, I gather) and they don't allemande left - instead they turn to their corner and eat a couple of beats with some sort of clapping thing and then on to the next call. Basically, they don't flourish. In general, however, they were friendly, welcoming and good dancers. During the one singer, I did discover that there were a number of reasonably good swingers, too. :)

My A dancing is still what I'm calling A1.5... There are a number of calls that I just don't have at ALL memorized - Switch To A [foo], Mini-Busy, Spin The Windmill, and probably others. My hourglasses need more work. My Swap Around is bad. (He called "swap around as many times as you can" from a Double Pass Through... The 2nd one wasn't obvious to me - though it also wasn't to the person next to me, either.) There's probably more. My Chain Reactions and Motivates are pretty good, at least.

Oh, and Square Through from a wave totally flummoxed me. (Wow, the Mac's spelling dictionary knows 'flummoxed'. Cool.)

All in all, an enjoyable evening. If they danced every Tuesday, I'd probably go next week, too. As it is, John's looking to see what else is happening next Mon or Tue.

My callers page is now up to 13.

Oh, and John has a great recording of "(You Ain't Never Had) A Friend Like Me" (from Aladdin), recorded for a singer, but it works fine for a patter, too. Desert Gold Records, catalog DGR-014... http://members.cox.net/callerbob/songclips/dgr-014.mp3 has a clip of the with-caller side of the record. I gather he has one from Lilo And Stitch, too...
