So there we are, having made Turkey/Bean Chilli - with added Chicken Andouile sausage for extra-meatiness.

I start eating it.
About 5 spoonfuls later I put it down and comment that it just isn't going down right.

I spend the next 2.5 hours feeling really really wonky.

Various regions of my guts are in various levels of discomfort. I feel like I /might/ need to run to the bathroom to rid my body of things in it from one end or the other, but no time I spend there is wildly...um...productive.

Mylanta is tried - my GODS, is that stuff nasty.
However, there's no appreciable change after taking it.

I decline pepto.

Eventually, I go to bed. I don't feel great, but I feel...ok.

It seems I sleep restlessly.

Today, I still feel a bit wonked, but mostly normal.

So, anyone have any clue what this might be? It doesn't say food poisoning to me. I've never had ANY allergies before so I can't really tell if this is one...

Have you changed anything about your physical activity level, recently? For me, when the seasons change, and when I start up activity after being kinda sedentary, I have serious trouble with meat. This has only started happening in the past couple of years. It'll gradually fade, too.

But, no, don't know... I know my own internal signals that sound like that, but only through trial and lots of error.

how much fiber did you have on passover? granted, I don't think beans would pass through your system that quickly, but I've been finding that my body is just now re-adjusting to the increased level of fiber (ie, my normal diet as opposed to the passover diet).

Maybe *that's* why they eat tzimmes -- for the fiber. . .

This was a really *sudden* reaction - within first bites. In 10 years, I've never seen him react this way. It was fairly unnerving for everyone. :(

That speaks of an allergic reaction. Allergies can develop later in life, and can be progressive. What was discomfort this time may end up as severe anaphylaxis the next time. You should probably examine exactly what was in that sausage.

What I'd do

..is to isolate the ingredients. Have a little of each, well spaced, to see what causes a reaction.

Sure, the reaction will suck - but it's better to have at home, prepared, than to have it sneak up on you un-prepared out in the wilderness (meaning away from the bathroom with the familiar magazines).

Allergies are strange things - they can develop spontaneously in old age. Besides, it may be a fluke - you might have had a bug that was waiting for a full belly (that's often how I discover that I have the flu).

Best of luck!

Above comment is good advice. It does sound very frighteningly like a reaction. I can tell you anything you need to know about allergies and anaphylaxis. And don't worry about TMI. Trust me, I've been there. :) Come by my desk, or I'll come pester you.

not sure what it was and don't have any useful commentary, but i guess it was a night for bad intestinal things (see my recent entry about eric and the ER...)

Maybe you had an existing bug that was dormant, but when you ate the heavy meat it decided to raise it's ugly head...or the meat put it "over the top"?

Best guess, it was the sausage. Sausages aren't always made with stable ingredients from batch to batch, so even if you've eaten the _exact_ same kind, something could've snuck in. Also, sometimes you develop a sensitivity to something over time, so a nitrate reaction could've snuck up on you. I could eat shrimp easily until my early 20s, then *wham* allergic reaction-o. It kind of sucks - that does sound, very much, like my reaction to shrimp however.

When looking for possible allergies or sensitivities, don't forget to consider whatever was already in your system when you started to feel ill. Sometimes it seems that the act of eating can trigger a reaction to your previous meal.
