I have no problem using the LJ term "meme" to mean either the question lists or the quiz sites, since the actual word "meme" has pretty much nothing to do with either. It really confused me for a few days, and then I adopted it as community slang usage for "the thing everybody's doing right now," and decided not to worry about it much.

Fair enough, though I think I might be cussed enough to try to coin the new term "lj-meme"...
Hm...

There’s lumpers and splitters, and I seem to be a splitter most of the time. I like having a word for the thing everyone’s doing now that involves a little effort and creativity on the parts of the people doing it, as opposed to the thing everyone’s doing now that involves filling out a form. The former seems to me to have a bit more to do with Dawkins’s original meaning of the word, in that they have some actual idea content.

Wouldn't "memetic virus" be a better word for both? Quizzes do seem more like memetic prions: not really up to the standards of a full virus.
