Vinyl

So, this morning I posted about Johnny Cunningham.

Soon thereafter I determined that I had no Silly Wizard or Relativity or any of Johnny's other projects on CD.

Today, I finally hooked up my turntable, so as to be able to listen to the Silly Wizard and Relativity and other of Johnny's projects I have on vinyl.

Now I /really/ want a small phono pre-amp, a much larger disk on my laptop, and a cd burner to take all of my vinyl and get it in to digital formats.

I also need a Vinyl->LJClientOTD shim. :)

I'm still partially ambivalent about it, but I think that if I own the license for the music because of a vinyl copy, then downloading it via, oh, Limewire, might be almost yet not quite morally okay.

Also, it's possible that the Griffen iMic actually accepts phono inputs. But I'm not positive on that, check it out.

There are a couple of various issues here.

A) Yeah, I'd probably be fine with downloading copies of albums I already own. Hell, I'm mostly ok with downloading things I don't already own if I'm likely to buy them later.
But I don't have the disk space to store such.

B) I have an audio input on this machine (Power Book (firewire)), but I'd prefer to be able to set up in a more comfortable and stable situation for my vinyl ripping than I could get hooked up to my amp, and my amp is old enough that I'd prefer a more modern piece of hardware as the only thing inbetween the turntable and the computer.

C) I still don't have enough disk space to do this, even if I hook the computer up to the amp.

D) I still don't have the cd burner.

E) I have yet to find a p2p network that stocks a wide range of the miscellaneous weird-ass shit I have on vinyl.
A quick search right now (using Acquisition, but I think they all speak the same networking) shows no Silly Wizard, and they were out on various american labels. Am I ever going to find the Welsh folk group "Ar Log"? I don't think so. The obscure radio-play-like drama "The Investigator" (Sen. McCarthy dies in a plane crash and goes right on doing what he was doing, but now in heaven.)
And so on...

If you have a spare 10+GB laptop drive (or external FW drive/chassis) and/or burner, I'll take 'em. :)

I think I have some Silly Wizard available on cassette from some live recordings that I borrowed when I worked at the Pioneer Valley Folklore Society. I'lll see if I can drag them out before my next drip down South. Or heck, maybe I'll just look for the stuff on Acquisition.

As an addendum to this, just for informational purposes as I see Spam has a turntable pre-amp available, Griffin has a new cable that allows direct connection of a turntable to the iMic product, which includes a grounding option.

If you're interested, you can see the iMic and the new cable.

I have a very nice vintage Scott tube amp/pre-amp that I was planning to use for exactly that purpose. Once I get done with ripping MY vinyl collection onto disk, if you're interested in borrowing it, I'd be happy to loan it to you. I should warn you, the tubes and so on are exposed, not in a case. My dad thought he could save some money back in 1965 or so when he bought it. SO I've got to clean it first.

Spare phono pre-amp

I seem to have re-acquired my standalone phono pre-amp. It's just a little box, about the size of a package of a half dozen zip discs. Want it?

{blink}
That'd be lovely.
If you can get it to Lunacon, I can arrange for it to be gotten from there. :)

Thank you!

(Now, do you have any of: a spare external Firewire enclosure, a spare large disk that could go in such an enclosure, or a spare large disc that'd fit in a laptop (Powerbook Firewire)?
:)
