Me and My body
Apr. 16th, 2004 03:15 pmMy body and I haven't been getting along recently.
We'll leave my brain out of this, for now and cover the more easily describable failures.
A) I've had something like 2-3 small gout attacks in the past couple of months. These have been annoying and to try to head off more, I got a new scrip for allopurinol - one of the standard drugs to prevent gout attacks. Unfortunately, it's reasonably normal to HAVE a gout attack when starting on it, as it precipitates out the uric acid in your body... so I'm laid up today, with my toe and foot worse than they've been in quite a while. I'm hoping this ends soon.
B) I've had a number of really annoying snot-fest colds recently. The last one started on Sunday and is almost gone now...it had me almost totally laid-up on Monday and I've not really been enjoying most of the rest of the week.
C) It seems almost done, but I've had something thought to be viral bronchitis for about the past 3 weeks.
D) I've mentioned my face recently, right? The AMAZINGLY EXPENSIVE goo seems to work pretty well, including at keeping a nascent attack these past couple of days pretty much at bay - leaving me just slightly blotchy and slightly itchy.
This isn't fun.
Historically, my body and I have gotten along much better than this...I've had the occasionally week knee, when my weight gets too high my back acts up, stuff like that, but I never had skin problems until 4 months ago, the gout had gone away for the last 3? years WITHOUT drugs and was controllable before then, and I rarely cought colds or other shit like that...in the past year, however, it's gotten much worse.
I suspect that my extended unemployment, associated depression and inaction have contributed to all of this, but there's got to be more to it than that...but all the tests they've thought of have shown nothing interesting...
{sigh}

Date: 2004-04-16 12:41 pm (UTC)Sounds like the usual unemployed/stressed-out body funk.
Though you may want to check on side-effects and cross-drug interactions (just in case).

Date: 2004-04-16 12:59 pm (UTC)It probably sounds counter-intuitive, but get the hell out of the house. Clean your room - rearrange the furniture, do something creative [do you still sing and play the flute?]. Go sit in a cafe and be depressed over coffee - just get out of the house. Ideally walk or bicycle there. Get your friends to drag you out [and do your level best to talk about anything -except- being unemployed :)]
I know the gout/cold/bronchitis makes it hard to go anywhere... but even lying flat on the porch instead of the bed can help.
... and have a hug and a kick in the pants from me. I -understand-

Date: 2004-04-16 01:12 pm (UTC)also, is there anywhere you can go swimming? swimming == good.
we're getting old..
Date: 2004-04-16 02:07 pm (UTC)Once my "depression" went away, something else stepped in to take it's place.
Stress weakens the immune system. Get rid of the stress [insert laughter here] and you'll probably be healthier.
I find it easy to blame it on that dreaded "being over 35" thing - which is truly annoying. {{{hug}}}
hope you feel better.
