So, where do (female) people go around here to buy their goth/retro/clubbing/vintage-styled clothing?

Asking for someone else on my friends list who's despairing of Boston's ability to provide.

Well, Garment District, obviously. Unfortunately, I've heard my ravekid-pants outlet, Ozone, has closed. And there's Poor Little Rich Girl in Davis Square, if that's her thing.

Second the Garment District (though there's some chance it will be put out of business by rezoning or some such thing... :-( ).

According to their website, even if they are forced to move, they will reopen in another location.

I can usually find fun things in the Garment District or on Hootenanny's sales racks. If you're into sociology, go to the Garment District early on Saturday mornings for the bizarre ritual that is Dollar-A-Pound. (Hootenanny's in The Garage in Harvard Square.)

And, actually, a surprising amount of fun stuff pops up at Target if you don't mind dropping by every few weeks. Sadly, the best Target stuff comes up about a month before Halloween -- right after they put the Halloween stuff out but before the shelves get picked clean. :) I'm not sure that counts, though.

given that i do almost all my clothing shopping in boston... i'd say there's plenty.
hootenanny, garment district/$-a-pound, plus the various goodwills and salvation armies (including the huge salvation army which is in some town near here which i'm currently blanking on.)
poor little rich girl, and there's a bunch of other clothing stores like it in harvard square -- there's one on arrow street (which also sells antiques, but i've found some very good clothing there) and of course oona's...

Are you thinking of the Salvation Army on Route 1 in Saugus? It's pretty darn huge.

yes! thank you, i knew i was some random town i don't ever go to for any other reason, on some single-digit local highway route, but couldn't remember the name.

i need to go back there.

we should go sometime -- i suspect we're close enough to the same size that shopping together would be useful and practical (not to mention, er, fun? :) ).

well, there's "useful and practical" and "liable to squabble over the same items" :)
but i actually suspect enough disparity in styles and color preferences to make it not a problem.
sadly i'm only available weekend days, really -- i don't suppose you're free saturday? :)

what other people said, unless your friend is not skinny. Things get a lot harder then... though Torrid can be nifty, and if your friend is into Indian rayon/velvet/embroidered stuff that's fairly easy to find. (Mine is from a small shop in Coolidge Corner by the movie theater.)

Now if someone could tell me where to get boots that fit around my ginormous calvesm I'd be happy.

You'll have better luck with that online or through catalogues. The Lane Bryant catalogue (and other like it, like Roaman's) sell boots with larger-circumference shafts.

Hi, I'm the friend JB's kindly trying to point in the right direction. I'm actually normal size for the most part but because I'm short I also have trouble fitting tall boots around my ginormous calves. Most shoe stores are happy to stretch boots for you for free though! I'm currently looking for a new pair of stompy gothy boots. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hmm...how about Hubba Hubba in Central Square?
From: [identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com
Ooh, yeah. Also, I got the shoes in this icon there (teeth not included).

I've found some very fun things at Boston Costume in Chinatown on Kneeland (right near NE Medical). They have gothy and renfairy things as well as costumey things.
And there's teddy shoes Central Sq. they have cool costume stuff hanging from the ceiling.

Would Teddy's Shoes happen to sell big stompy gothy boots perchance?

(I'm the friend who is bemoaning the fact that I don't live in Toronto anymore.)

yes, though i'd also try hubba hubba for shoes as well.
(their clothing tends to be more overpriced and not worth it, but their shoe section is better. and it's right across the street from teddy's.)
