Never heard of the other Oz books? I grew up on 'em. :) Well, the real ones, that is. L. Frank Baum wrote the original 14 (Lost Princess would be #11), as well as other Oz-related books. After Baum, the nearest to "official" Oz writing went to Ruth Plumly Thompson, and after that, other authors picked up the idea and expanded the universe by over a hundred more.

Personally, I stick with the original 14. I tried reading a couple latter ones, and didn't like the style nearly as much. I'm in the middle of reading them to Justin, now (we're up to #6).

Well, DUH. Of COURSE I know Oz.

I quite like a very large percentage of them, though Martin Gardner wrote an entirely crappy one - very disappointing considering how much I love his work in general.

No, it's the "Junior Edition" that I've never seen before...

I read a few as a kid and loved them.

Gregorian read a few and was pretty fond of them, but we didn't re-discover them until he was kind of beyond them in reading level, I think.

I'm speaking specifically of the "Junior Editions".

That said, at some point, you should both go back to them. They have their issues, but in general, they're quite wonderful.

The Oz books are great; if a little light on depth of character, they make up for it in charming flights of fancy. My almost-6-year-olds adore them.

As do I.

It's the "Junior Editions" that I'd never seen.

Huh. There were a whole pile of them. I'm surprised you never ran into them.

I have. Really. Just not the Junior Editions.

The Lost Princess of Oz is an old familiar book, but I've never heard of junior editions. Do you know if they're the same text? Have they been simplified? How?

This was vastly shorter.. I'd guess it was about 5"x5" and about... 60? 80? pages.

I didn't see a credit for who did the abridging, nor did I catch the dates.

Y'know, I heard that L. Frank Baum was attempting to make a complex political statement with the Wizard of Oz, but I've never really explored that.

It might ruin the story for me. =/

This is an ongoing debate. I've not read up on it enough to know what the current status is, but last I looked, there was a bunch of "He meant it!" "No, he didn't!" "Yes he did" going around.

Snopes ( http://www.snopes.com/language/literary/rosie.htm ) comes down on the "No, he didn't" side, as does The Straight Dope ( http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_392.html ).

Ok, so there's no ongoing debate. :)

(Hi. Who are you?)
