SilverFast or VueScan?

If you don't have a reason for picking one, feel free to do so anyway, but please let me know. :)

minor piont. If you aren't a graphics geek and you are only going to use it for web images then my comment is a none issue.

I admit my problems are more high end then the normal user.

Vuescan. Just. Works.

I really like VueScan a lot, it's very versatile. I can't say that I've scanned with it in the LAB color space model, so I can't address the other person's comment.

If you are running OS X 10.4, you might want to try Image Capture, it's a fairly capable piece of scanning software on its own.

And if it's a somewhat new Epson scanner, their software is fairly reasonable. (Epson Scan, I think it's called.)

I have Epson's Scan program for Windows. It's much better than the software that came with my previous scanners.

Thing is, Windows software is not 100% useless, due to Wine or VMWare, but really, it's this >< close.

Mac (Power, not intel yet) or Linux support is mandatory.

It's Vuescan for me - because there's no Linux version of Silverfast. It was an incredibly good deal when I got the full version for $40, too; I think the price has gone up since then.

VueScan.

We still have a scanner we'd like to get rid of because the PC computer it connects to is soon going to leave the house. It has a slide scanner attachment. Any interest?

I sent Halleyscomet mail last night asking for info about it... so maybe. :)

I have both, and find myself using Vuescan more. Dunno if Silverfast
supports firewire-SCSI adaptors, but Vuescan sure does! Both are
imperfect, but produce good results. Vuescan is a winner if you have
more than one scanner like I do.

Vuescan for me. It Just Works, and if I want it to Just Work differently it's got a plethora of knobs. I use it for film scanning and some postprocessing; I live in RGB-land and thus haven't seen any CIELAB noise problems that may exist.
