Fuck football
Dec. 30th, 2007 01:43 amI'm convinced the set break happening right now is so that people can watch the last 5 min of the football game, uninterrupted by the damned music. I SO don't get the team sports culture of this country (or so many others).

Date: 2007-12-30 08:29 am (UTC)I was standing in the back of the Johnny D's club space and from time to time I was surrounded by people who'd left their seats to crane and watch the frakking tvs. It was... annoying, at best...

Date: 2007-12-30 08:34 am (UTC)It's one thing to decide that going to a show is preferable to watching the game, but still really wanting to see the last couple of minutes so you know who won.
Which is what I got from your original post.
But the scene you are describing seems ridiculous. Although the game did become more compelling as time went on, so maybe they were inexorably drawn in? I dunno. Still sounds stupid.

Date: 2007-12-30 05:50 pm (UTC)It certainly did! So much so that I ended up not getting to JDs until after it was over, and I'm not even a football fan. I still managed to dance enough for my feet to hurt, and as far as I'm concerned, had a perfect night.
As for the break, they take one at some point, so why not then? If at that moment, everyone was going to be focused on the game, wouldn't you *prefer* the band be on break? I was amused to hear about it, since watching the last few minutes just meant watching the Other Guys score a touchdown.
(Not that it affects my allegiances, but I think I find Eli cuter than Tom.)

Date: 2007-12-30 02:13 pm (UTC)A) Did you have the context for last night's game in specific? Because for New England fans, this was a truly record-setting game, and someone who loved both the band and the game might be truly torn. Hence, the folks leaving seats to go watch.
B) For some folks, Johnny D's *is* just their local bar that they prefer, and the music is secondary.
C) 'They' may also have scheduled the set break exactly to time with the last five minutes so that the cheering fans didn't interrupt the music. I'm willing to give the band and management that much credit, at least.
All that said, I'm sorry that the game interrupted your enjoyment of the show. Though you might have asked one of the folks who seemed to be preferring to watch the game if you could have their seat?

Date: 2007-12-30 02:59 pm (UTC)Several answers, many of which are specific to this season, but the real answer boils down to this:
Many people have invested a minimum of 50 dedicated hours and hundreds of casual hours to following the team this season. Last night's game was the end of the regular season, and was in question until the very end, unlike many of the games which were decided early.
So a lot of people who went out expected to hear that everything was decided by the first 15 minutes, only to find that the records they had invested time in following were actually at risk. Said records were indeed set late in the game.
