OH My GODS. That - minus the problem of not being a dancing-enabled venue - was an AMAZING show.

The final encore was an all-acoustic version of Put Out The Lights, down off the stage, in the audience.

Tomorrow night, in Toronto, Great Big Sea will be coming by. Honestly, that's not a huge extra attraction for me, though I DO really like GBS... but there are a couple of you around the TO area who might (or might not, I don't know, actually...) care.

Are any you Ontarians actually showing up tomorrow?

(Oh, and if you want to try to call me, the cell to use is 781 979 0344.)(In general, though, my cell number hasn't changed.)

If you're looking for something to do to kill time in Toronto, you should visit the Bata Shoe Museum.

I'm not into shoes or fashion, but I found it to be a interesting place to visit.

Sunday, they're having a lecture (2pm) on "Moccasins and Music as Geographical Origins of First Nations".

I don't get it.

Some of their songs are okay, as background. Some of their songs sound like a cello player is bowing my spinal cord while the rest of the band is singing on an AM radio around 10 KHz off the carrier.

But they have fans who believe that all of it is the greatest thing since the invention of the tin whistle.

Why?

Have you heard them live?

Or are you basing your assessment on a recording?

Jam bands in particular are a very different experience live. I felt the exact same way about Phish and the Grateful Dead until I saw both bands live (I know a lot of people would probably have reviews of either band that are not at all dissimilar to yours).

I have heard the Grateful Dead live twice, and loved both concerts. I have heard Phish live several times, because they were my home-town's Grateful Dead cover band, and they were opening for groups I wanted to see. I did not like Phish, altho I respect a lot of Trey Anastasio's work in Acid Jazz.

I have been dragged to shows featuring "Celtic Rock" acts, and pretty much despised them all. Which is a problem, as my girlfriend is totally into the genre. Fortunately, she likes a lot of good music too; we recently went to see They Might Be Giants together, where we both loved TMBG and both hated the jam band that opened for them ("Apollo Sunshine").

No, I have not seen Oysterband live, nor Great Big Sea, nor Flogging Molly, nor Dropkick Murphys. Nor do I have any desire to do so. I've seen Steeleye Span, and they were tolerable.

I just don't understand why one would deliberately listen to off-key fiddles, tinnitus-inducing tin whistles, and screaming drunk vocalists.

Damn, I wish I had realized they were coming even that close. Glad you enjoyed it.
