I only need something accurate to 1/32th of an inch... but I need to measure mah jong tiles to find replacements... and I've discovered that this company (Royal Depth Control (what a name!)) made sets in:
7/8 x 1 1/4 x 15/32
7/8 x 1 1/4 x 7/16
27/32 x 1 7/32 x 1/2
27/32 x 1 1/4 x 7/16
7/8 x 1 1/4 x 1/2
7/8 x 1 7/32 x 1/2
7/8 x 1 1/4 x 7/16
7/8 x 1 7/32 x 7/16
27/32 x 1 7/32 x 1/2
27/32 x 1 7/32 x 7/16
7/8 x 1 7/32 x 1/2
...

Given the weather, the closer the better. :)
(Ok, I suppose if I'm getting in to the car, it doesn't matter if it's super close... but still.)

I have a micrometer you're welcome to use.

capacity is only an inch, though, so it won't get the long dimension

Your tool is only 1"? My tool is much bigger!

I have a digital caliper you can borrow.

I might even be in the area in the next couple of days.

Can you not just stack up a bunch of them and use a regular ruler?

Not and feel confident in the result. It's an option, but...

Those are nice pieces, I would worry though that the replacements would be colored differently. Those may have darkened with age and newer pieces will be less yellowed.

I have a digital caliper, but I'm a bit far away for a quick loan. I'm sure someone more local has one, but if it comes down to it and you are in my area you can stop by anytime.

Or you could go to a Home Depot or Lowes and "try out" the calipers. Oh look you just happen to have a Mah Jong tile in your pocket...

I suspect any replacements I'm going to end up with will be of a similar age... whether the discoloration is the same is always a challenge, of course, but I expect it'll be _close_.
I hope. :)

I _do_ have 13 extra tiles I could put stickers on, if I wanted to go that direction, but I'm hoping to get the proper replacements, and can fall back on the sticker option if it comes to it.

I have digital calipers. You could come over during our dim sum thing this afternoon, borrow them, and see friends, even. ;-)

A fine, fine idea. I was planning on coming anyway - though I've failed to come up with a dish to potluck with - but I've just discovered that I don't have your address. Can you send it along?

Maybe we'll play Mah Jong with our dim sum? ;)

Mason has a truly mind-boggling collection of calipers, micrometers, digital-micrometers, etc.

probably far more accurate than you need, but if y'all are still in touch it's worth the trip over there just to marvel at them all.

I got this guy (http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&q=General+6%22+dial+caliper+142&spell=1&oi=spell) at my local Ace Hardware for all of thirty bucks. It's a good tool to have.

Ah. I can probably take the calipers out of my bag that I threw in there last Tuesday, then.
