It’s just not actually frictionless enough for quick-n-trivial posts, which might not, in fact, be what the site is best for but if it’s going to supplant FB for me it has to be able to do that. :(

As a step in that direction, I HAVE added a desktop shortcut on my iPad for this posting page.

Speaking of which, is there a style I could set my reading page to which will expand comments in place without having to either forward-and-back, or new-tab it?

Not quite what you're asking for (I don't know whether that exists), but in any style, there's a module you can enable called "Cut Tag Controls" that gives you a single-click option to expand all the cut tags on the page.

ETA: gack, parse failure. That's for cut tags, not comments. The anonymous comment about view=flat, below, may be more useful.

I'm not sure what you mean by "frictionless," but I sometimes keep a tab open to Dreamwidth, which puts it "closer" both mentally and in terms of clicks. (Mostly, that's about leaving that tab there when I shut the browser down at night, so I can start the morning with stuff from my friends, which is lower-stress than more news-focused sites, even though some of my friends post news/political linkspam.)

In Firefox at least, there's a "pin tab" feature that I use for my Reading Page for the same purpose.
