More dead musicians...
Feb. 28th, 2004 03:05 amWhat the heque's going on in the local music-going community that noone I know went to the Celtic Fiddle Festival and thus could have told me earlier of the death of Johnny Cunningham?
I was introduced to Silly Wizard in HS (by a teacher I keep hoping will show up at Baitcon someday, actually) and had the great good fortune to get to see them 3 times (maybe 4?) before they broke up. I also got to see Relativity once or twice. Johnny was an AMAZING fiddler. I hadn't seen much of him in the past...10? years, but I'd heard talk of some problems and recovery from same. I was always happy know he was out there and that I'd get to see him again eventually.

Date: 2004-02-28 07:23 am (UTC)And I'm up to my eyeballs in the local folk community here, plus two pretty intense online communities, and I hadn't heard either :(

Date: 2004-02-28 08:38 am (UTC)Sorry to hear that. Silly Wizard was also one of my first introductions to Celtic music. In fact, I was just about to make a music comp for a friend that was to include "Queen of Argyll". It will be bittersweet to hear it now, but (as with John Hartford, my favorite fiddle player) at least the music is still with us. I give thanks for that, and for all the years he spent playing to give audiences good memories like yours.
