... trying to distract myself...

Do you recognize these things?

They seem to be one form of a tree pit cage.

Cambridge has particularly nice (narrower - about 3' diameter) ones around Porter Sq.

What else might they be called?

Where might I get one?

ETA: http://www.urbanaccessories.com/ has some NICE stuff.

Those things are to protect the trees from dogs At least thats what I thought they were for. I have no idea what to call them. Tree protectors maybe? If you go to google images and search on tree protectors you get a few pictures of them.

They're called tree guards. Froogle will give you a bunch of sources, I've also seen them in Home Depot/Lowes type stores.

Yay! (editing the post for the best ones I've found so far.)

I'll have to look next time I'm in HD/Lowes. :)

... now to see how much person-sized ones cost. ;)

Well, I've seen them around some fairly good-sized trees, so person size should be doable... :)

Just noticed the mood part on your post... *hugs*

No info at all on the tree cage/protector/scaffolding/weaponry/whatever, just here to give you a *hug*.

Keep in mind, the usual practice is to put 2 trees in the cage and let them battle it out. Two trees enter, one tree leaves!

I can't remember who coined the phrase, but...

I really liked the Urban Accessories stuff. Now if I only had a place where I could use that sort of thing...

Unfortunately, although New York has some excellent specimens of the species, I don't know the actual name for them. The less elegant ones (more like chainlink fences) are sometimes used to protect against deer, but I haven't come up with any brilliant Google searches to help there.

...You doing OK?

I heard a talk last week by a guy from the Arboretum who claimed that this design was originally to protect trees from horses, who would be inclined to munch on the bark while tethered to the tree. If by some chance the tree grows big enough, the cage arrangement will kill it. I suppose in the meantime, while they're slim, the trees might prefer to not be dog rest rooms.

pretty standard wrought iron work

Just noticing that this is the sort of work most blacksmiths can do fairly trivially, particularly if you're looking for someting a bit non-standard.
